Town police are asking local child day care centers to review a recent state law to learn whether that law requires them to provide certain contact information to police.

Police would use such contact information to reach those day care centers to inform them of any emergencies or natural disasters that may affect the safety of the children at the centers.

The new law, An Act Concerning Notification By Law Enforcement Agencies To Day Care Centers, or Public Act 15-161, takes effect on October 1.

Contact information that would be provided to police would include the name of the day care center, its address, and its telephone number. Police would then have a means to notify the centers about incidents such as fires, crimes, and various other emergencies, plus natural disasters, such as earthquakes, storms, hurricanes, and tornadoes occurring in the vicinity of day care that may endanger the safety and welfare of there children there.

Police ask the operators of individual child day care centers to review the new state law to determine whether it requires them to provide police with contact information. Such contact information may be sent to police Office William Chapman at william.chapman@newtown-ct.gov.
