I-84 Crash Ties Up Traffic Wednesday Morning

A motor vehicle accident on westbound Interstate-84 in Hawleyville at about

6:30 am Wednesday caused extensive traffic tie-ups during the morning rush

hour, resulting in vehicles backing up to the area of state police Troop A

barracks in Southbury.

Motorist Alfred E. Farrah, 69, of Danbury was driving a 1964 Chevrolet Corvair

westbound about one-quarter mile east of Exit 9 when, for an unknown reason,

the car spun around 180 degrees and was struck head-on by westbound motorist

Joseph Grochowski, 56, of Waterbury, who was driving a 1986 Mercury Cougar,

state police said.

The Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps transported both men to Danbury

Hospital. Firefighters worked at the scene.

Mr Farrah was listed in serious condition in the intensive care unit of

Yale-New Haven Hospital Thursday morning.

Mr Grochowski was listed in fair condition in Danbury Hospital that morning.

State police believe a tractor-trailer truck may have been involved in the

accident. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Trooper

Cario at Troop A at 800/375-9918, ext 7004.
