WPCA Considers Sewer District Expansion

Water Pollution Control Authority (WPCA) members are considering possible

expansions of the sewer district which would extend the edge of the sewer

system in two areas to homes on Blakeslee Drive, Hanover Road and Dayton

Street.

The WPCA recently mailed questionnaires to six residents on Blakeslee Drive

and at 45 Hanover Road to ask whether they want the sewer district expanded to

serve their homes and make them eligible for long-term, low-interest loans to

pay for sewer construction costs.

Of the four responses received, three favored a serwer district expansion and

one did not, according to WPCA records.

The homes that would be included in an expanded sewer district already have

sewer lines running past them.

Also, the WPCA plans to ask other property owners on Hanover Road, which have

sewer lines running past them but aren't in the sewer district, whether they

want to be included in an expanded sewer district. These properties are

located on Hanover Road between its intersection with Blakeslee Road and 45

Hanover Road.

The house at 45 Hanover Road will have a sewage pumping station built in front

of it, and its owner has asked the WPCA whether the property would be able to

connect to the sewer system.

Due to the specific design of the sewer system and the boundaries of the sewer

district, the properties on Hanover Road and Blakeslee Drive have sewer lines

running past them but aren't allowed to connect to the system.

Also, WPCA members also are considering expanding the sewer district to

include eight houses on Dayton Street in Sandy Hook Center. The WPCA is

awaiting a Health Department recommendation on whether Dayton Street should be

sewered.

Proposals to expand the sewer district require affirmative action by voters at

a town meeting.

The town is building a sewer system to comply with a state order to rectify

longstanding groundwater pollution problems caused by failing septic systems

in Sandy Hook Center, the Borough, and Taunton Pond North. Sewer system

completion is expected in late 1997.
