A New Look For Jenner Stadium

B Y S TEVE B IGHAM

If you haven't been to Bruce Jenner Stadium since the last Newtown High School

football game, you would probably have a hard time recognizing it.

The field has been torn up. Piles of dirt 30 feet high now tower over the

50-yard line and front-end loaders litter the sidelines.

Renovation work on the field began late last month, nearly two months ahead of

schedule. When completed, according to NHS Principal Bill Manfredonia, the

well-known gridiron will be transformed into a multi-purpose field, enlarged

to allow regulation field hockey, soccer and lacrosse games, as well as

football.

Also, the track around the field will be ripped out and replaced with an

all-weather, eight-lane track made out of rubberized material for healthier

and safer running. It will replace the cinder and dirt track that hasn't been

used for a track meet in more than 10 years.

Track meets at NHS will resume next year. For now, the teams will continue to

compete on the road. Practices are being held behind the school on the

softball and soccer fields. All softball games and practices are being held at

Dickinson and Treadwell parks.

According to George Graikoski of O&G Construction, this year's mild winter

allowed the work to begin more than a month early. The work was originally

slated to begin in May with a completion date of August. However, by getting a

head start, he expects the renovation work to be done by late June or early

July.

In order to make room for the widening of both the field and the track, Mr

Graikoski said part of the hill on the visitors' side (near I-84) has been

excavated. Other features include a sprinkler system and improved landscaping

and grading.

Mr Manfredonia said this year's graduation ceremony will be held on the soccer

field behind the school.

In addition to the renovation work, the Blue & Gold Club is currently raising

money to buy lights for the field, as well as a facility to house a snack bar,

rest rooms, and storage.
