Grants Available For
Historic Preservation
The Connecticut Historical Commission this week announced that grants will be
available under three separate programs for historic preservation and
restoration projects and archeological field investigations in 1996.
Properties that are on the State and/or National Register of Historic Places
and are owned and operated by non-profit organizations or municipalities are
eligible to compete for $300,000 in funds available through the 1996
Connecticut Historic Restoration Fund grant program, according to John W.
Shannahan, director of the Connecticut Historical Commission.
A competitive selection process will be used to determine all recipients.
Grant funds for restoration projects and archeological field investigations
will be awarded on a matching (50/50) basis, and individual grants probably
will range from $3,000 to $30,000.
Application packets are available by sending name, organization, address and
telephone number to Paul Loether at the Connecticut Historical Commission, 59
South Prospect Street, Hartford 06106, by calling 566-3005, or by faxing the
information to 566-5078.
The deadline for submittal of applications will be November 13.
Applications also are being solicited for funding under the 1996 historic
preservation grant program admistered by the Connecticut Historical Commission
with the state's share of the Historic Preservation Fund, money which Congress
appropriates annually for preservation efforts. Eligible projects include
architectural and archelogical surveys and public education activities
suitable for a statewide audience.
An estimated $45,000 will be available for these grants. Grants are awarded on
a matching basis with three awards of $5,000 available for survey projects.
(The Newtown Historical Society recently was awarded one of these $5,000
matching grants under the 1995 program for a survey of pre-1825 houses
throughout the town. See separate story.) The deadline for submission of
applications to the Connecticut Historical Commission for the 1996 program is
September 30, 1995, and all projects must be completed by May 31, 1997.
A third program provides funding for historic preservation to municipalities
which are participating in the federal Certified Local Government program.
Approximately $60,000 in grants is available on a matching basis for various
historic preservation projects. The deadline for these applications is
September 30, 1995. All projects must be completed by June 30, 1997.
Applications are available from the Connecticut Historical Commission.
