Reading For Charity

BY MICHELE HOGAN
Evan has been asking friends and relatives to pledge a few cents for every
page he reads, or a few dollars for each book. Then he stretches out with a
good book and brings in the money.
So far he has 21 sponsors, some paying as much as 5 or 10 cents per page. When
he finishes reading all 216 pages in his first book, The Far North , by Will
Hobbs, he will have earned $158 toward a wheelchair-accessible van for Whitney
Balakier.
Evan said that he really wanted to help Whitney, because accessible vans are
too expensive for her parents to afford on their own.
Evan discussed the read-a-thon idea with his parents and teachers and everyone
supported the idea.
He said that he would like to encourage all students to do this kind of thing.
He said "you can do anything, reading, math, or jump rope. It's fun, too, I
have to say."
