Slinging hash is not in the job description of Frank DeLucia, administrator at
Nunnawauk Meadows. But last Monday, he donned a Red Sox apron and dished out
kudos as well as a delicious breakfast for all the resident volunteers who
help with the daily lunch program offered at the community house.
"You make the meal program fantastic, and we really appreciate that," said Mr
DeLucia, who has been in his position 12 years. Assisted by his wife, Miriam,
and administration employee Mary Pierce, Mr DeLucia presented a meal of ham,
scrambled eggs, creamy au gratin potatoes, fresh fruit salad, assorted
pastries and muffins, coffee, tea, and juice to 20 volunteers. "We thought it
would be a nice gesture," he added.
The idea went over big, ending in a round of applause for Mr DeLucia and the
suggestion that he do this "every week."
"I think Frank out did himself. This is out of this world," said Ruth Burke.
She and her husband, Ben, have been active volunteers at Nunnawauk Meadows
since they moved there 15 months ago. The couple now delivers lunches to
homebound residents and takes a few extra minutes to visit with each person.
"The program couldn't run without volunteers," said food site
manager/activities coordinator Joan Bowers. "There are four regular people -
two that come five to seven days a week. But there are a total of 20 who help
out, including [one volunteer] who does the flyer for me."
Mrs Bowers said she was glad the volunteers were recognized by the
administrator. "They need his approval and need to know he thinks enough of
them and the program," she said. "He's a good sport to do it."
