Victoriana At Slawinski

FELTON, CAL. -- Buyers of Victoriana gathered on October 25 for Slawinski
Auction Company's most recent auction. Items included furniture descended from
the Sutro family of San Francisco. Adolf Sutro made the first and largest
silver strike in Virginia City, Nev., while his family went on to be one of
the most prominent in the history of San Francisco. Prices quoted do not
include a 10 percent buyer's premium.
A large grouping of Victorian furniture was topped by an oak cased Tiffany &
Company grandfather clock. Standing eight and half feet high, it attracted a
final bid of $12,000. A Victorian walnut abattant with applied "books and
letters" carving and maple interior sold for $5,500, a large oak china cabinet
with curio section and profiles lions went for $3,250, a Victorian oak
halltree with stick and ball detail seemed a bargain at $1,750, and carved
walnut 11 piece Eastlake dresser and washstand of excellent quality was $2,100
for the pair, and a rosewood Rococo Revival center table, 50" across, went to
buyer on the floor at $4,750.
During a local estate clean-out, while making a pile of used clothing for The
Goodwill, a purse was found on the floor of the bedroom closet. When inspected
it was found full of personal items including a grouping of jewelry. Added as
a late consignment it featured a 3.4 ct. diamond solitaire ring of VS1 clarity
which sold to a private buyer for $12,000, another ring featuring a 2.0 ct.
diamond with emeralds and diamond baguettes for $5,500, and a 1.7 ct. diamond
solitaire platinum ring, $3,500. The total sales for "the purse" grouping
exceeded $36,000.
Paintings included a large William Watson, Jr, oil on canvas which brought
$6,000, a barnyard scene with baby chicks by William Baptiste Baird at $2,500,
and a large A.A. Talboys oil on canvas with cats went at high estimate,
$3,500. Good buys were had on two good oils by Arthur Hill Gilbert which sold
at $1,300 and $1,000. A group of five works by A.D.M. Cooper ranged from $300
to $1,500 each.
Other interesting items included a Gilbert "Maranville" calendar clock at
$1,700, a fine Federal mahogany chest of drawers with cookie corners and
banded inlay at $1,250, a Meissen figural grouping at $900, a Wavecrest
"kelva" humidor for $225 and a 12" Rookwood high glaze vase by Lorinda Epply
for $700.
