Bids On Bypass Road Due March 12
The state bid opening on the Fairfield Hills bypass road construction project
has been postponed to March 12 to allow bidders to respond to minor changes in
construction specifications.
Competitive bids had been scheduled to be opened on February 26.
The two-week delay stems from specification changes concerning guard rails for
the project, said Tim Gaffey, the state Department of Transporation's (DOT)
bypass road project manager.
The planned east-west connector road is intended to alleviate truck traffic
congestion in the town center and improve east-west traffic flow.
The bypass road will provide improved access for motorists between Route 25,
Interstate-84, and Route 34.
The project's cost is estimated at $4 million, including construction and
design expenses.
Construction on the long-awaited project is expected to start in May or June.
The bypass road is expected to be finished by the end of the 1988 construction
season.
A 1991 agreement, which resolved a lawsuit filed by the town against the state
over the state's construction of Garner Correctional Institution, provided, in
part, that the state build a bypass road across the Fairfield Hills grounds to
alleviate traffic congestion in the town center.
