This week in 1990

Jeff Chontos ripped off a ten-yard touchdown run on the first play of overtime

and then grabbed a pass from David Brookes for the two-point conversion as the

Newtown High football team defeated Ledyard 14-6 in the CIAC Class MM State

Championship game. Newtown's only score in regulation, a four-yard run by

Jason James, was set up by a Scott Lish interception. Also starring in

Newtown's first state title victory since 1981 were Brian Gleason and Josh

Lubin. The Indians were coached by first-year head coach Bob Zito, John

Norris, Pete Weaver, and Dan Fitzsimmons.

This week in 1985

Steve Powers pulled in a pair of touchdown passes from Brian Trosan as

fourth-seeded Trosan Oil knocked off the top-seeded defending-league-champion

Stan's Boys 13-12 in the championship of the Newtown Adult Touch Football

League. Bob Hickson threw touchdown passes to Jim Tolster and Jim McHatten for

Stan's, which fell one PAT short. Other members of Trosan Oil included Rich

Trosan, Paul Basso, Mike Healy, Louie Galante, Dennis Morgan, John Lipovsky,

and Ben Warner.

This week in 1980

Newtown High junior Dori DeMeo placed fourth in the 200 freestyle relay and

fifth in the 500 free to help the NHS swim team to an 11th place finish at the

CIAC State Open swimming and diving championships at Southern Connecticut

State University. DeMeo also scored points on a relay team with Diane King,

Mary McQuail, and Sue Emslie.

This week in 1975

An unprecedented total of seven members of the undefeated Newtown High

football team were named, by Western Connecticut Conference coaches, to the

All-WCC first team. Those seven members included Pete Meier, Gary Pepe, Pat

Coyne, Bill Waters, Don Whittle, Dale Bryson, and Joe Kennedy. The magnificent

seven was also named to the Danbury News Times' All-Area team.

This week in 1970

Things were a little bit sloppy as the Newtown High School boys' basketball

team opened its season with a 72-64 loss to Southbury. Newtown saw four of its

starters foul out of the game as it committed a total of 31 personal fouls.

The Indians were led by the scoring efforts of Charley Jacobi who netted 17

points. Scott Wallace and Jerry Shpunt added 12 points each for Newtown as

well.

This week in 1965

Newtown High soccer coach Bob Sveda, and his team captains Jim Glover and Ron

Baxter, were photographed putting the first-ever WCC soccer championship

trophy into the case at NHS. Back on October 28, Newtown had tied Abbott Tech

for first place in the WCC's first season.

This week in 1960

Newtown's Triangle Junior Rifle Club won a close match, 847-831, in Bridgeport

against the Bridgeport Junior Rifle Club thanks to the high scoring efforts of

Joe Hoffman who scored 188 points. Other Newtown members to score included

Dave Housh (176), Julie Woods (166), Gary Walker (163), and Jim Fluharty

(154).

This week in 1955

NHS grad, Kim Mitchell, returned home for a visit after helping the Cornell

University freshman soccer team compile an undefeated 6-0-1 record. Mitchell

had been a three-sport star at Newtown High, lettering in soccer, indoor

track, and baseball.

This week in 1950

New bleachers were furnished by the Newtown Lions Club for the NHS basketball

team at the Edmond Town Hall gymnasium. The bleachers were positioned on the

north side of the court across from the newly altered stairway entrance where

fans had assembled in the past. The new addition at the Town Hall also

furnished the gymnasium with a new entrance on the south side, where double

doors led into a spacious entryway where tickets and refreshments could be

sold. Spectators would now be able to enter by way of the new stairway leading

down to the south side of the floor.

This week in 1945

Four local sportsmen, Pete Brazee, Ed Willmore, John Hanson, and Ervin

Stickles - entered the woods in Wingdale, New York, and in less than thirty

minutes, Brazee bagged a handsome 14-point buck weighing 247 pounds. The buck

was one of the most handsome animals taken in the Wingdale area all year and

while Willmore didn't do the actual shooting - he felt that he earned all the

venison he could eat as he helped Brazee lug the buck all the way back to the

vehicle.
