LACK OF WATER CLOSES NHS
Newtown High School students were sent home early last Friday after their
school nearly ran out of water.
Because of a faulty pump system, water pressure was extremely low. School
officials first noticed the problem Thursday and shut down the school
overnight to allow the pump to recover. On Friday, they decided against
closing school, feeling there would be enough water to make it through the
day.
At one point during the day, an announcement was made about the shortage of
water. It asked students and staff to make every effort to conserve water. It
backfired. Toilets reportedly began flushing like never before and hands were
washed repeatedly. Lines formed at the water fountain.
With the water beginning to fade, school officials opted to send students home
at 12:30 pm.
By Friday afternoon, workers had replaced the pump to the main well on Mile
Hill Road. "All in a day's work," said School Buildings & Grounds Supervisor
Dominic Posca.
