This week in 1991

Matt Snow knocked one in for par on the 33rd hole of the Newtown Country

Club's Men's Club Championship Tournament to defeat Steve Sharlow, 4-up, thus

becoming the first golfer to win both Junior and Men's Club Championships at

NCC. In other action that week, Libby Payne, Vito Velotti, and Ann Adams

joined forces to shoot a 57 and take first-place honors at the Club's Fourth

of July Scramble. The threesome beat out Bob Melvin, Paul Melvin, Kathy Ries,

and Joan Crick by one stroke.

This week in 1986

Lexington Gardens capped off a near-perfect 22-1 season with an 18-5 victory

over Parker Sunoco in the Newtown Little League Majors Division championship

game. Rich Kuhn mashed a pair of double to lead the winners at the plate while

Ryan Lewis and Josh Houghton each added a double and a single. Ten-year-old

Matt Daly worked the first three innings and earned the victory while Ken

Barney fired three innings of shutout relief. Barney, who led the league with

13 home runs on the season, was walked three times in the game and singled in

the other.

This week in 1981

The Buccaneers were crowned champions of the Newtown Parks and Recreation

Girls' Softball League's Senirs Division after a 14-1 campaign. The team,

coached by Klaus Ertl, included; Chris Weatherup, Michelle Muraszkin, Terry

Kasbarian, Kristine Rennert, Emily Guthrie, Marie Rogers, Kari Pomeroy,

Christine Ertl, Julie Pearlman, Bonnie Marquis, Tina Barone, Kim Severnak, and

Laura Schaedler.

This week in 1976

Ray Rau defeated Jim Smith, 6-4 and 6-0, to win the men's singles title at the

Newtown Tennis Association's July Fourth Novice/Intermediate Tennis

Tournament. Donna Leavitt beat Sally Leaty, 7-6 (5-2) and 6-3, to claim the

women's title and then teamed with Leaty to defeat Carmen Accashian and Judy

Duckworth for the women's doubles title. Stoney Lane and John Cavanaugh won

the men's double by forfeit while Bruce and Marji Barker defeated Dick Capozzi

and Lyn Johnston for the mixed doubles crown.

This week in 1971

The Fourth of July Progress Festival Tennis Tournament ended at the Dickinson

Town Park this weekend and the two champions were members of the younger set.

Newtown teenagers Charlie Jacobi and Delly Ozanne copped both the men's and

women's singles titles, respectively.

This week in 1966

The Connecticut Travelers Softball Club will head west for double headers in

six different states this week. They will play one fast-pitch game and one

slo-pitch game at each stop, all for charity. The team, which includes a

handful of Newtown players, includes; Francis Albert, Bob Seibert, Hal Peck,

Jay Carle, Eddi Board, Glen Wyatt, Bill Duncan, Jack Berry, Lou Nespoli, Ollie

Thomas, George Kregling, Jeff Griffin, and Ed Mulford.

This week in 1961

R Scudder Smith has joined The Bee staff, starting his duties on Wednesday of

this week. For the past four years he has been a student at Union College and

has been employed by the Millivac Corperation in Schenectady, New York. Mr and

Mrs Smith, with their son David and daughter Sherri, moved to Newtown over the

weekend and purchased a home on 9 Knollwood Drive on Mt Pleasant.
