ZBA Approves Pump Station Plans
The town is in the process of gaining zoning approvals for the construction
four sewage pumping stations planned for the municipal sewer system.
At a meeting of the Newtown Zoning Board of Appeals on June 5, the town
received zoning variances for constructing sewage pumping stations at 47-A
Hanover Road in a residential zone, and also at 5-A Glen Road in a business
zone.
At a Borough Zoning Board of Appeals meeting scheduled for June 18, the town
will seek zoning variances for the installation of sewage pumping stations at
33-A Taunton Lake Drive in a residential zone, and also at 17-A Baldwin Road
in a residential zone.
Each of the four facilities will include a submersible pump and accompanying
shed. Each pumping station includes an electrical generator, which would be
used in the event an electrical outage prevents sewage from being pumped.
If town sewer lines are extended to Newtown High School, a fifth sewage
pumping station would need to be constructed to serve that building.
Pumping stations are used to pressurize sewage which is pumped upward in the
sewage system until it reaches a point where it can flow downhill under the
force of gravity to the sewage treatment plant.
