House Badly Damaged By Kitchen Fire

with cut:

A fire which may have started in a microwave oven did extensive damage to the

interior of a house on Walker Hill Road Wednesday night.

"The fire destroyed the whole kitchen and there was heavy heat damage in the

rest of the house," said Fire Marshall George Lockwood. "The damage is

estimated at $82,000."

Firefighters from the United Fire Company of Botsford, Sandy Hook Volunteer

Fire & Rescue, and the aerial truck from Newtown Hook & Ladder responded to

the structure fire when it was reported at 9:37 pm. The blaze was quickly

extinquished but fire officials remained on the scene until well after

midnight.

Emergency medical technicians from Danbury Hospital and the paramedic from

Danbury Hospital also responded to the fire call. One firefighter was treated

at the scene for what were apparently minor injuries.

The house, at 7 Walker Hill Road, is owned by Helen Herbold.

Mr Lockwood said the fire originally was reported as a "microwave smoking."

The microwave has been sent to the state lab for examination, he said.
