School Bd Gives Superintendent High Marks

The Board of Education has given mostly above average and outstanding marks to

School Superintendent John Reed on his annual evaluation.

"The Board of Education is very pleased with the job the superintendent is

doing," said Herbert Rosenthal, the school board chairman.

In all areas of evaluation, Dr Reed received no dissatisfactory marks. The

worst marks were those of satisfaction. The only area the school board said

could be improved was in community relations.

"While not a weakness, (he) did have three areas that were performed in a

satisfactory manner," the board wrote on the evaluation.

Mr Rosenthal said the board especially wants a district newsletter

resurrected.

In the evaluation, the board strongly urged that Dr Reed not sacrifice his own

professional development activities in the future to balance the budget.

"Last year, due to budgetary constraints, you elected not to attend a

conference on technology that you had planned to attend. This year, the board

believes it is imperative that you receive training dealing with future trends

of technology in education, regardless of other budgetary issues," the

evaluation said.

Dr Reed has also set his goals for the year, which he will be judged upon

during his next evaluation.

Getting approval for the high school and Hawley school building projects is

the top goal. The superintendent also plans to determine if an extra school is

needed; review the business office's structure; assess the computer needs for

administration; and reinstitute a district newsletter called, Reachout.

Dr Reed was evaluated on how well he carried out last school year's goals. The

school board said he satisfactorily accomplished all of them. His goals were

to work for the approval of the high school addition, the technology plan and

Hawley renovation; ensure the middle school showed positive growth; and have

the high school develop an improvement plan based on the results of the

state's tenth-grade test.
