Unions, School Bd Settle On Pay Increases
B Y A MY D'O RIO
Two unions and the Board of Education have settled contracts that cost between
two percent and three percent more than the current contracts, according to
net figures.
Herbert Rosenthal, the school board chairman, said the contracts are fair, and
were settled in a timely manner.
The Newtown Educational Assistants Association, which has around 67 members,
will be getting three percent raises each year of the three-year contract.
During the first year, union members can move up a step on the salary
hierarchy. A step increase based on seniority and education.
The union has agreed to increase its contribution to health insurance costs
from 0.5 percent to 1 percent, and both it and the seven-member nurses' union
will be going to a managed-care system.
The nurses' union has also gotten a three-year contract and three percent
raises each year. The members can move up a salary step each year of the first
two years of the contract. Besides the managed-care conversion, the board is
getting the union to finally contribute to the health insurance costs. Nurses
will be giving one percent of their pay.
Three of the five non-certified unions have agreed to a managed-care health
system, and some teachers and administrators have voluntarily agreed to it as
well.
John Torok, the school system's business director, said the board expects to
save around $100,000 in health insurance costs due to the unions changing to
managed-care and due to all school employees using a medical identification
card.
