The Middle School Madness reading program was set up three years ago at the
Cyrenius Booth Library in an effort to get kids motivated to become more
interested in books.
It is apparently working. This year, Children's Librarian Rebecca Swenson said
she collected 421 book reviews.
In order to receive credit for reading a book, students must first read the
book, then make a review of the book.
Each time a students read a book, his or her name was put into a hat for a
drawing at the end of the Madness program. Recently, Ms Swensen drew 14 names
from the hat. Those picked received various awards. The winning students
included Allison Frobey and Stephen Mancuso (gift certificates to Tune's CD's
and Tapes), Mark Boland and Megan Steuer (two box seat tickets each for a New
Haven Ravens game), Emily Steinfeld and Sheila O'Connor (each won a free
dinner for two at My Place Pizza), Elizabeth Portnay (a "Mancala" game from
Toy Corner), Joshua Borchetta (a fun-saver camera from the Drug Center), Kevin
Byrnes (a soccer ball from the Drug Center), Brian Pious (a glider from the
Drug Center), Colleen Davis ( a free lunch at the Botsford Drive-In), Kristen
De la Vega (a bouquet from the Florist on the Green), and Kristen Breaux and
Amy Borockman (both won NBC Sports hats).
