DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SIDEBAR (#2): Victims Have Rights!
In Connecticut, victims of crime have rights and are protected by law. Two key
rights relating to victims of domestic violence are briefly described below.
If you have questions about your rights as a victim of crime, or would like
information about available services, call the state of Connecticut Office of
Victim Services.
If you are a victim of domestic violence, and you report the crime to the
police, you can apply for compensation with the Office of Victim Services for
medical and mental health expenses and lost wages resultng from the crime (CGS
54-204 and CGS 54-224). For information, forms and assistance completing the
application, call the Office of Victim Services at 1-800-822-8428.
You can also ask to be notified when your offender is released from the
Department of Corrections. You must file a request with the Office of Victim
Services or the Commissioner of Corrections and provide a current mailing
address (CGS 54-228).
The Office of Victim Services is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 am to 4:30
pm. It is located at 1155 Silas Deane Highway in Wethersfield.
Important Telephone Numbers
The Connecticut Coalition Against Domestic Violence (CCADV) is a membership
organization with the purpose of working together to end domestic violence by
changing the social conditions, beliefs and social actions that perpetuate
abuse against women and children. Founded in 1978, the coalition's membership
includes 18 domestic violence shelter programs across the state. The programs
provide safe accommodations for women and children and counseling and support
services for victims.
The coalition's work focuses on providing statewide public policy advocacy,
legislative reform, and education on the issue of domestic violence. It has
established itself as a strong and credible voice for battered women.
The coalition has published a directory of the domestic violence shelter
programs in its membership. For a copy of the brochure, the coalition may be
reached at 860-524-5890. The coalition's offices are at 135 Broad Street in
Hartford.
Phone numbers and information, including how to contact local criminal courts
(for arrests and protective orders), civil courts (restraining orders,
divorce, custody), sexual assault crisis services, and 24-hour child abuse
