Doug Rose Cops Batting Crown
Western Connecticut Federal Credit Union was the odd-man out when it came time
to decide the 1995 Newtown Slo-Pitch Softball League playoff qualifiers. But
despite an unsuccessful season on the ball field, WCFCU did manage to crown
its second batting champion in three years.
Outfielder Doug Rose copped this year's 'A' Division batting crown, finishing
the 16-game regular season with a .633 average - the highest in the three
years since official statistics have been kept.
Rose played in 12 of his team's 15 games this season in which he tallied ten
multiple hit games including a 5-for-5 day against first-place Catering By
George, and two four-hit ball games.
Rose also finished the season seventh in the league in home runs with four,
and 15th in RBI with 16.
Last year's 'A' Division batting champion, Scott Terrill of Catering By
George, finished this season sixth on the list with an average of .522.
Terrill, though, led the league in hits (36), runs scored (31), and triples
(5), and was fourth in RBI (22) despite batting leadoff in his team's order.
This year's leader in both doubles and home runs was Gervais Bros' Tom Wyatt
who finished with six and eleven, respectively. Wyatt has led the league in
doubles for three-straight seasons and had finished second in home runs in
each of the last two years before winning this year's title. Wyatt also
finished second in batting (.574), third in runs scored (24), and third in RBI
(24). Bob Kick, of Catering By George, was this year's RBI champion finishing
with 32. Kick also finished second in doubles with five, and added three home
runs while finishing the year eleventh in the league in batting at .478.
Other statistical noteables in 1995 were George Matern and Dave Kingsley of
Newtown Exxon, who remained in the top five in hitting all season finishing
third and fourth. Dave Green, also of Exxon, finished second in home runs
(eight) and RBI (25). And Chris Dennis of George's finished the season with a
flourish to end up fifth in hitting (.527), third in doubles (4), and fourth
in RBI (22).
Matt and Chris Daly, Andy Shpunt, and Rick Kasbarian rounded out the league's
top ten in hitting.
