Gomes Interns For ESPN While At Hood
(with cut)
Whether interning with the ESPN SportsCentury project, maintaining a 3.25
grade point average in her major, or competing in field hockey, swimming or
lacrosse, one local athlete shows that dedication and hard work pay off.
Natalie Gomes of Newtown, daughter of Al and Kate Gomes and a senior at Hood
College in Frederick, Md., worked as an intern and freelance production
assistant with the ESPN SportsCentury project during her summer 1998 recess.
Her work with ESPN has extended into the fall with Natalie completing
correspondence work for the project while at Hood.
Natalie will continue her work on the project at the ESPN Westport office
during her winter 1999 recess from Hood. She majors in communication arts with
a concentration in broadcast journalism and she is the former editor of the
college's newspaper, Hood Today . After graduation she plans to pursue a
career in sports broadcasting.
Natalie has recently completed the fall 1998 field hockey season at Hood
College. She decided to join the team, having played goalie for a season while
at Kent School. She adjusted to playing a field position, and started as a
defensive player for the Hood Blazers. This season Natalie was twice named
"Athlete of the Week" by the coaching staff at Hood.
"Natalie's skills improved with each game we played," said team captain Kelli
Jessum. "She dedicated herself to the team and always pushed beyond the goals
she'd set for herself. She stepped up this season and consistently played her
hardest."
Currently Natalie is competing in her fourth swim season at Hood. She was
named a captain of the team for the third consecutive season since her
sophomore year.
She also maintains significant leadership roles on campus. Natalie is the
current president of the Intercollegiate Athletic Council and has received the
Delaplaine Arts Scholarship for the 1998-99 academic year for excelling in her
major.
She was named to the Hood College Dean's List for the spring 1998 semester and
participates in the Inter Varsity Christian Fellowship. During the 1996-1997
academic year, Natalie was the floor representative for the sports and
physical fitness floor on the Meyran Hall House Council.
