HOM Students Explore What Tomorrow's Technology Will Bring
(with photos)
BY MICHELE HOGAN
Programming real robots to talk, roll, turn and clasp small objects, was all
part of the show last Friday at Head O' Meadow School.
Tom Swenson of Mobil Ed Productions said to each group of assembled students
"When you grow up, you will be surrounded by technology. What an exciting
world! So that's why I'm here today. So you can understand, `that's why they
want to learn math, science!'"
Although most robots today go where no one has gone before (like Mars, the
Titanic , or inside human tissues in microsurgery), they will be used for more
ordinary purposes as costs go down.
Mr Swenson recognized that kids' opinions of robots are heavily influenced by
television and the movies, so he reminded them that robots who attempt to be
evil, kill people and take over the world "might not be real."
Presentations were given for all grade levels in the school. The fourth
graders, who are studying robotics as part of the science curriculum, had
hands-on workshops after the presentations where they could program the robots
themselves.
Denise Kaiser, member of the Math/Science committee of the HOM PTA said that
this is the first time that they have had separate money specifically for math
and science enrichment.
Working closely with Gail Maletz, math/science specialist at HOM, Mrs Kaiser
is hoping to bring several math-science demonstrations, including "Newtown in
a Nutshell," to HOM.
With a broad smile she said, "Look at what your PTA money buys. Can I do that?
Put in a plug for the PTA."
