A beaming James Lysaght was sworn into office as the town's new police chief

in ceremonies Sunday in the Alexandria Room of Edmond Town Hall.

Town Clerk Cynthia Curtis administered the oath of office to Chief Lysaght as

his wife, Linda, and their children Patrick, Andrew, and Julia, looked on.

About a dozen local police officers, including detectives and patrolmen, were

among the 75 people who attended the ceremonies.

Bristol Police Chief William Kohnky wished his former second-in-command well

as the head of Newtown's 36-member police department.

Police Chief Thomas Rotunda of Ridgefield and Police Chief Richard Mulhall of

Bloomfield also attended the ceremonies.

In opening remarks, First Selectman Robert Cascella welcomed Chief Lysaght,

47, to town as its top law enforcement official.

Chief Lysaght and Mr Cascella met several times in recent weeks to discuss

Newtown law enforcement issues.

After the oath of office was administered, Police Commission Chairman Carol

Mattegat presented Chief Lysaght with his badge.

On Monday, the new chief met members of the police department and the public.

During the week, Chief Lysaght continued his meetings with officers at the

police station to develop lines of communication between himself and them.

The Police Commission reviewed 118 resumes in their search for a new chief.

Michael DeJoseph retired as police chief last March. Lieutenant Owen Carney

and Captain Michael Fekete served as acting chiefs in the absence of a

replacement for Mr DeJoseph.

Chief Lysaght worked in the Bristol department for the past 24 years. While in

charge of Bristol's patrol division, Mr Lysaght supervised 84 officers and

civilians in a police department which has 114 sworn officers. Bristol is a

city with almost three times the population of Newtown.

Until Mr Lysaght and his family relocate from Bristol to Newtown, he will be

commuting to work here.
