Learning About Government
(with cut)
Colin Doniger and John Tamborino are attending Boy's State, an American Legion
sponsored program at Eastern Connecticut State University June 21 -26. This
program can prepare young people for high places -- President Bill Clinton
participated in Boy's State for the state of Arkansas.
Boy's State is a unique learning program designed especially for 11th grade
boys.
During the week, juniors study the branches of the state government, the
voting process, and development of good citizenship.
Participation in the legislative process will include attending forum
meetings, nominating representatives, debating issues, and in the end,
electing a governor at the student level.
Edward Nawrocki, member of the American Legion Post 202, said that there is no
Girl's State in Connecticut at this time. He said that Girl's State, a program
to teach junior girl's about government, is starting to become available in a
few states.
He cited another program, The Oratorical, which is offered for boys and girls
from 6th grade to 12th grade. This American Legion sponsored program, which
includes discussions on the constitution and public speaking contests, allows
boys and girls to compete for major scholarships in the spring.
