The Fourth Annual Newtown Health & Safety Fair, a collaborative effort among
local volunteer organizations, was held at the middle school last Saturday.
"It was a great success," said Mae Schmidle, co-chairperson of the event with
Dr Della Schmid and Health District Director Mark A.R. Cooper. "The turnout
was excellent," Mrs Schmidle said. "It was at least 1,800 and we may have hit
2,000 this time."
Mr Cooper said the four-hour fair, which featured health screenings,
demonstrations and displays, brought out many families with young children. It
provided an excellent opportunity to stress the importance of good health and
safety practices, he said.
Firefighters from Hook & Ladder Fire Company demonstrated a vehicle
extrication in front of the school, finishing moments before the Life Star
helicopter landed on the front lawn to pick up the "victim." Informational
tours of the helicopter followed. Participants also could get a closeup look
at displays by Newtown Ambulance, the Danbury Hospital paramedic service, and
the Dodgingtown, Hawleyville and Sandy Hook fire companies.
Screenings included blood glucose by the staff of Danbury Hospital; blood
pressure, Newtown Ambulance; body fat, Danbury Hospital; cholesterol, US
Health Care; vision, Newtown VNA; osteoporosis, Danbury Hospital; skin cancer,
Dr William Notaro; scoliosis/posture, Dr Della Schmid of Colonial
Chiropractic.
Sue Goodridge and Colleen Honan of the Newtown Junior Woman's Club judged the
children's mini-poster contest which had the theme "Why My Summer Was Healthy
and Safe." The winners were Haley Keane, first prize; Lauren Hanulik, second;
Lydia Monks, third. The cash awards were donated by the Newtown Business &
Professional Women's Club.
Gregory Clinnin of 59 Parmalee Hill Road was the winner in a free drawing for
$200 worth of sporting goods from the Bethel Cycle & Fitness Center. The event
was sponsored by the store and by the Newtown Rotary Club.
The organizational committee for the event also included representatives of
the American Red Cross, Ashlar of Newtown, BPW and the Newtown Woman's Club.
