NHS Band Gives A Grand Champion Performance In NYC
(with cuts)
BY MICHELE HOGAN
The Newtown High School band was proclaimed the Grand Champion of the 237th St
Patrick's Day Parade in New York City on Tuesday.
Led by flutist James Galway, Irish pop star Phil Coulter and Grand Marshal
Albert Reynolds, former prime minister of Ireland, the 81-band parade drew
hundreds of thousands of green-clad spectators.
Jim Dumas, director of the high school band, described the Newtown musicians
as "tight, very together."
The day worked out great after a rather unsettling beginning.
The parade was being televised, and Mr Dumas said that the commentator for NBC
had been given a list of bands in order, which placed Newtown closer to the
front of the parade than where they had set up.
Instead of changing the list, one hundred and eighty-five Newtown students
were asked to move up past two other bands at the last minute to match the
commentator's list. According to Mr Dumas, the kids took it all in stride.
Newtown played the piece Birdland 21 times in the hour it took them to march
up Fifth Avenue from West 45th to West 78th Street.
Newtown has performed in the parade for the past 21 years. The last time that
they were the grand champion was in 1995.
Mr Dumas said, "Things couldn't have worked out better. The kids did great!"
