The Butterfly's Lesson Of Transformation
(with cuts)
BY MICHELE HOGAN
Three hundred and twelve butterflies fluttered up, then found landing places
on lavender plants in the Middle Gate School courtyard, and on the children
who were gathered to watch their release.
The butterflies had been in boxes in classrooms since April.
The children had watched larvae form a cocoon, and a few weeks later, saw them
emerge as beautiful painted lady butterflies.
Pam Fagan, a math/science specialist, said that the butterfly project fit
beautifully with the life cycles portion of the third grade science
curriculum.
Mrs Fagan said that the same anonymous donor who provides the children in the
district with young trees on Earth Day, donated the plants for the Middle Gate
butterfly garden.
Plants for butterfly food, and butterfly egg-laying were selected.
Within two weeks the butterflies will have mated and laid their eggs, and
their life cycle will come to an end.
Butterflies have been released at elementary schools throughout the district
over the past two weeks.
