Health District Slates Hearing On Its Budget

The board of the Newtown Health District will conduct a public hearing on

Wednesday, April 30, on a preliminary proposed 1997-98 budget of $310,143,

almost the same as this year's budget.

"Unless state funding is drastically cut back, our services aren't going to

cost the town and the borough any more next year than they did this year,"

said Health District Director Mark A.R. Cooper.

Last year the town contributed $199,607 and the Borough $18,143 for the health

district budget, an estimate which is being used again this year. The health

district anticipates receiving $32,270 in a state per capita grant, $3,592 in

a federal block grant, and $44,038 in fees.

The budget includes $204,475 in salaries, $11,260 in operating costs, $15,592

for contractual services, $14,747 in transportation costs, $4,600 for

legal/financial, $34,000 for employee health insurance, $5,637 for workers

compensation and $16,045 for Social Security payments. A capital expense of

$540 is included for additional file cabinets.

The public hearing on the budget will be in the conference room at Canaan

House on the Fairfield Hills campus at 7:30 pm. Copies of the proposed budget

are on file in the health district office in Canaan house.
