Glorydays, January 26, 1996

This week in 1991

Coming off of a 12-2 championship season, the St Rose School boys' basketball

team put the finishing touches on a 13-1 season, with a 55-36 win over St

Joe's of Danbury, to successfully defend its Parochial League title. Matt

Zelno scored 25 points and ripped 15 rebounds for the Rams while Greg

Gallagher added eleven points and Shawn Brennan ten. Kyle McSweeny and Michael

Brennan also scored for the winners.

This week in 1986

The 400 freestyle relay team of Bryan Coleman, Todd Conklin, Jeff Richey, and

Peter Sutherland turned in a time of 3:56.11 to edge out Foran's squad by a

hundredth of a second, lifting the Newtown High School swim team to a 93-92

victory. The Indians, who improved to 1-5 with the win, were also helped by

the 1-2-4 finish of divers Mark Gravel, Dave Polgar, and Doug Baehr.

This week in 1981

The Newtown high wrestling team beat up on Holy Cross of Waterbury, 42-12 as

Rick Panettieri, Pete Jamieson, Gary Schneider, Larry Miller, Phil Berry, Jeff

Miller, and Bob Hickson all recorded pins. Bill Ainsworth and Mike Real both

won decisions for the Indians who ran their team record to 4-0 in the Western

Connecticut Conference and 9-3 overall.

This week in 1976

The Newtown High boys' basketball team and first-year coach Kevin O'Sullivan

got 16 points from Chris Wertz but didn't stand a chance against Masuk and its

NBA-bound center, Mike Gminsky. The 6-11 Masuk center scored 49 points and had

24 rebounds in the 89-59 Masuk victory.

This week in 1971

As reported in the St Rose Sports Guild basketball column by Mike Whelan; The

Bullets, led by their big center Jim Hinkley, outlasted the Celtics 24-19 to

continue its unbeaten string. Tim Chase and Pay Coyne also starred for the

undefeated Bullets. Other players around the league who tallied impressive

stats for the week included Pat Schults, Bill Trosan, Happy Costa, Kevin

Sullivan, Jim Wieler, Bill Thomas, Bob Brewster, Jamie Crick, Gary McAuliffe,

and Dan Gearin.

This week in 1966

In a banquet at the Yankee Drover Inn, " Coach " Harold DeGroat was honored by

the Newtown Jaycees as their winner of the Jaycees Physical Fitness Leadership

Award, presented for his many contributions to Newtown sports programs. Other

strong candidates for the award were Ann Anderson, Paul Krueger, James

Osborne, Thomas Vail, Deanne Lebeau, Owen Gallagher, Georgia Fitchett, Douglas

Hewitt, Jeanne Berkins, Bob Sveda, Tom Roberts, Louis DePaul, Pete Kohut,

Peter Schuler, Roger Streeter, Norm Westlake, Harry Fullerton, and Frank

Tomanio.

This week in 1961

Representative Edward J Coleman was reelected as chairman of the Newtown Park

Commission. At the meeting, the Commission accepted a check for $200 from Mrs

James Brunot of Taunton Hill Road and expressed the possibility of cleaning

the swimming pond and enlarging it in the coming weeks. Other Commission

members attending the meeting included Mrs Fredrick Herring, William Honan,

John Kelly, Mrs A Fenn Dickinson, Howard Beardsley, Mrs Edwin Storrs, and Mrs

William H Walsh Jr.

This week in 1956

In their first game as members of the Sterling House League, the Newtown

Athletic Club Lassies defeated the Telephone Company team from Bridgeport

49-19 and then overtook the Freddies from Norwalk, 49-31. Newtown was led by

the scoring of Joan Glover and Sally Beardsley.

This week in 1951

Raising non-resident membership dues from $3 to $5 and resident membership

from $2 to $3 was voted at the midwinter meeting of the Newtown Fish and Game

Club. Club president Oscar Johnson directed the meeting at the Edmond Town

Hall. Following the meeting, Dr Russell Strasburger showed motion pictures of

a hunting and fishing trip taken by himself, Dr Benton Egee, and Joseph

Samperi, in which Donald Stickles joined for the fishing.

This week in 1946

After a close and exciting first half the Hawley High School girls' basketball

team behind the scoring efforts of forwards Nancy Baxter, Shirley Shannon, and

Mary Lou Bradley rallied late to romp New Milford, 40-24. Baxter and Shannon

scored 15 points each in the victory and Bradley added the game's other ten.

Bradley then netted a season-high 22 points in an NHS 60-15 win over Woodbury,

who had been out of basketball for three years before recently reforming the

program.

This week in 1941

The Newtown Bowling League reached the half-way point in its season with Bill

Kayfus and his Owls team winning top honors with a 33-9 record. Harry

MacClymon's Buzzards captured second-place honors. Shorty Conger of the Robins

led the league with a three-game high score of 383, Andy Wheeler of the Crows

had the high-single game of 153 and the highest average at 108, while George

Clark of the Swans posted the high no-mark game with a 94.

This week in 1936

The Hawley High boys' basketball team was victorious in a low-scoring

defensive battle with Woodbury, winning 16-11. Linc Mitchell scored eight

points to lead the winners while Shipley added six and Cascio the other two.
