"Three Viewings" Deserves One Word: Great
By June April
STRATFORD -- Frequently appearing at Newtown's Little Theatre -- in his home
town -- the actor Alexander Kulcsar is currently starring in the opening
monologue of Square One's current production, Three Viewings .
This poignant, funny and hard-hitting play is well-written, and equally well
performed. Playwright Jeffrey Hatcher has an interesting range of productions
he has created, including some for children ( Natty Little Manners ).
All of the three monologues take place in a mortuary. In "Tell Tale," Mr
Kulcsar's character deals with his love for a real estate saleswoman whom he
brings into the various funerals to help her network for new clients.
The second monologue, "The Thief of Tears," is the bittersweet saga of a young
woman who steals the jewels off corpses at funerals. Playing the vulnerable
Mac, Peggy Nelson reaches out to the audience with her childhood pain and
creates a bond of sympathy.
With mysterious and humorous overtones, Alice McMahon portrays the widow of a
husband who was a wheeler-dealer who leaves her with enormous debts and a
variety of characters who all want their money back, now . "Thirteen Things
About Ed Carpolotti" winds up this play with a sense of a few hours
well-spent.
Continuing at Stratford's Square One until March 21, Three Viewings is
well-worth the time and money. Credit goes to Director/Artistic Director Tom
Holehan for another great selection, both in cast and play.
