Newtown won't be getting a local Connecticut State Lottery office after all.
Instead, the state intends to open local outlets in Stamford and West Haven
where people can go to cash in winning tickets of up to $5,000.
Several weeks after Rick Rubelmann, assistant chief of the state's lottery
unit in Newington, confirmed that Newtown was being considered, lottery
officials decided other locations would be better.
"Newtown didn't make the cut," Mr Rubelman said.
Stores that sell lottery tickets may only cash winning tickets worth up to
$599. All others must be cashed at lottery headquarters in Newington, which
has proved to be an inconvenience for many lottery winners. In response, the
state decided to add lottery outlets around the state in some shops which
already sell lottery tickets.
The first outlet opened at a liquor store in Willimantic last fall and Mr
Rubelman said a total of six are planned across the state. The announcement
has not yet been made about exactly where the lottery outlets will be located
in Stamford and West Haven.
In addition to cashing winning tickets, the outlets also will handle
situations in which winning tickets are rejected by the lottery computer, a
situation which happens only a few times each year, Mr Rubelmann said.
Lottery players who win more than $5,000 will still have to go to Newington to
collect.
