Glorydays November 3, 1995

This week in 1990

Ten minutes into the first half, Meg Eckle pounded the back of the cage for a

goal as the Newtown High field hockey team tied Bethel 1-1 in their season

finale. It was the first game of the season that the Lady Indians didn't lose,

finishing at 0-12-1. Goalie Tara Galbo made six saves in goal for Newtown

while Tracey Willis, Sara Appleyard, Sara Dumican, and Kathy Ferris turned in

outstanding efforts as well. Ferris finished the season as the team's leading

scorer with six goals.

This week in 1985

The Newtown High girls' soccer team defeated New Fairfield 3-2 to successfully

defend its Western Connecticut Conference championship. Patti Hensel scored

the game-winning goal and assisted teammates Kate Stark and Debbie MacDonald

on the other two. Hensel finished the season with a team-high 17 goals and was

named All-State. Kristin Burke was second on the team with 14 goals. The Lady

Indians finished the season at 15-1 overall, losing 3-2 to undefeated Wilton

in the state tournament.

This week in 1980

Butch Mark turned in one of the finest individual scoring performances in NHS

football history as he single-handedly posted 26 points in a 40-6 win over

Pomperaug. The senior rushed for 132 yards on eleven carries as he scored on

touchdown runs of six and 60 yards, returned an interception 23 yards for a

score, kicked a 22-yard field goal, and booted five extra points. NHS

quarterback Steve Teichert threw TD passes to Tony Baldino and Kevin Booker in

the game as well as the Indians improved to 6-1.

This week in 1975

A long, rainout-filled season finally came to an end in the Newtown Slo-Pitch

Softball League as 'A' Division champion Matty's Restaurant defeated 'B'

champion, Newtown Park and Rec, in a best-of-three series. Matty's swept P&R

by scores of 14-11 and 11-9 behind the big bats of Wayne Thibault and Rainer

Ertl. Other members of the Matty's team included Jim Guariglia, Ron Weems, Bob

Barrett, Tony DeCarlo, Jack Matern, Jeff Robertson, Joe DeCarlo, Joe Bradbury,

Matty Byrk, Rick Matern, Greg DeCarlo, and Clint Hensel. Starring in the

series for P&R were Bob Cavanaugh, Ed Milot, Bill Freitag and Joe Hamburger.

This week in 1970

The NHS football team spanked New Milford 50-0 at Homecoming, shutting out the

Green Wave for the third consecutive year and retaining The Boot Trophy. NHS

QB Jason Stevens threw for four touchdowns including three to junior standout,

Courtenay Hough. Bob Berkins scored two touchdowns and Art Conklin and Mark

Fesh each found pay dirt once as the 7-0 Indians gained 30 first downs in the

game while racking up 780 yards of offense.

This week in 1965

The NHS boys' soccer team lost in the first round of the CIAC state

tournament, 5-1 to EO Smith of Storrs. The team, under coach Bob Sveda,

finished the season at 7-4 overall, while team captain Jim Glover ended the

season with a school-record 26 goals.

This week in 1960

The NHS boys' soccer team raised its record to 9-1 with a 3-1 win over

Litchfield. Ronnie Hull scored the Indians' only goal in regulation, but in OT

Ron Beardsley and Jim Tenney each found the back of the net to bring home an

NHS victory. Newtown coach Bob Sveda looked forward to his team's berth in the

umpcoming State Class C tournament.

This week in 1955

Clifford Richardson rook the lone NHS medal at the second running of the

Housatonic Valley Schoolman's League Cross Country Championships in

Litchfield. Newtown placed third overall behind New Milford and Housatonic

Valley Regional. Richardson placed fifth overall in the race ahead of

teammates Ralph Jensen (13), George Powell (16), Ray Cromwell (18), Guy Cullen

(19), Edgar Beers (20) and Clayton Ferry and Paul Davis who tied for 22nd.

This week in 1950

The Hawley High School girls' soccer team, coached by Miss Ann Anderson,

finished the season undefeated and claimed the Housatonic Valley Schoolman's

League championship with a 10-2 win over Litchfield. Burnelle Curtis and Pat

McMahon each scored a pair of goals in the win for Newtown while teammate

Janet Berglund added the other. Goals counted for two points in this era. In

the team's earlier game, Evelyn Hrivnak saved the undefeated record by scoring

the only goal in a 2-0 win over New Milford.

This week in 1945

Despite strong efforts by Joe Wupperfield, Jack Watkins, Randall Watkins, and

quarterback Johnny Lorenzo, the Hawley High School six-man football team was

beaten 51-0 by Bethel. The loss was humiliating to be sure, but the game story

in The Newtown Bee explained " the heavy Bethel team took longer to score

their quota than last time. " Nothing like improvement.
