LIVING HISTORY ` MUSTER' BY MUSEUM VILLAGE CORPS WILL RECALL THE SPIRIT OF THE

NINETEENTH CENTURY

MONROE, N.Y. -- Museum Village and the Civil War Troopers, Fife and Drum Corps

will hold its second "Living History Muster" on July 8 and 9 at the village.

Each day's events will begin at 1 pm with a Grand Parade around the green,

followed by performances by various corps throughout the afternoon. The day

will conclude with the combined corps massing on the green in a "circle of

friendship" as they join together to play such favorites as "Yankee Doodle,"

"Grandfather's Clock," "Old Dan Tucker" and "Dixie."

The tradition of musters dates back to colonial times, when local militia

drilled on the village green. Soldiers were expected to recognize and

instantly obey the commands, or "camp duties," played on the fife and drum. In

battle, stirring medleys bolstered their courage. Off duty, fifers and

drummers entertained the troops with lively quicksteps, jigs and reels.

"Entertainment is what modern day musters are about," says Vincent Czepiel of

the Civil War Troopers. "Our focus is more on the music than on strict

historical reenactment. The uniforms are representative of the period but are

by no means historically accurate. You don't have to be a history buff to

enjoy a muster."

In addition to the fife and drum activities, all 40 exhibition buildings and

its staff of costumed interpreters will be on hand. The museum is open from

noon to 5 pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Admission is $8.
