Traffic Campaign Seeks To Safeguard School Buses
Police plan to conduct a high-visibility campaign to deter motorists from
passing school buses which have their red warning flashers on.
Police Chief James E. Lysaght, Jr, said Wednesday police will conduct
"Operation Safe Stop" on the morning of Thursday, April 2, in cooperation with
school officials.
Police will be located at four "hot spots" which pose high risks of drivers
passing school buses, Chief Lysaght said.
These include the Newtown Middle School parking lot, Sandy Hook Center, and Mt
Pleasant Road near Johnnycake Lane.
Also, there will be one roving "hot spot" in which a plainclothes officer will
ride on buses that travel to and from Sandy Hook School.
Under the terms of new regulations, the state Department of Motor Vehicles
allows school bus drivers to report incidents of illegal passing which will
result in the motorist receiving a $450 summons.
Chief Lysaght urged motorists to obey traffic laws on stopping for school
buses which have their red warning lights flashing. Obeying the law will
prevent potential tragedies, he said.
