ON THE ROAD FOR JULY 11, 1997
The July 18 date by UB40 at the Oakdale in Wallingford - along with every
other date on the band's summer itinerary - has been cancelled.
Another band has been added to the lineup for the July 24 Hartford visit of
The Lilith Fair, a touring festival of all-female bands, or in the case of THE
CARDIGANS, bands fronted by females. This is not an anti-man kind of thing, by
the way, it is a celebration of women in rock, organized by SARAH McLAUGHLIN.
Anyway, along with McLaughlin, The Cardigans, TRACY CHAPMAN, FIONA APPLE and
PAULA COLE on the mainstage that day/night, a second stage is apparently going
to be set up as well. And that's where festivalgoers will be able to find
Britpop duo ALISHA'S ATTIC.
Produced by ex-EURYTHMIC DAVE STEWART, Alisha's Attic is the sister duo of
Karen and Shelly Poole. There is no Alisha in the Attic. The band's first
album is Alisha Rules The World , and in their home land (the UK) the duo's
album went gold and achieved Top 20 success with the single "I Am I Feel."
"Alisha" is an imaginary friend, a character the Poole sisters created, who is
an innocent and a devil at the same time. Sounds like fun. And unlike their
British male counterparts, the ridiculously juvenile Gallagher brothers of
OASIS who fight, it seems, just to make another headline, the Poole sisters do
disagree with each other about almost everything but don't need the spectacle
of going public with everything. Instead, Karen and Shelly say it's these
contrasts that make their music so strong. Let's find out...
Last month we found out FISH, as in former lead singer of MARILLION, yes, is
coming to town this month. Derek Dick, the man behind the stage name Fish,
will be at Tuxedo Junction in Danbury on July 24 (which happens to be the same
night of the Lilith Festival, yup).
Now comes word that MARILLION, the band, which picked up STEVE HOGARTH after
Fish's departure, is once again doing the rare-US tour thing. Marillion, which
did play Tuxedo Junction (in a three-man, abbreviated form) with Hogarth on
lead vocals once in the past, will be at Toad's Place in New Haven on
September 9.
Also at Toad's Place, Acid Shrine and Joybuzzer will open the MODERN ENGLISH
show next Tuesday night. The Who's Who has been added to the bill for the July
23 GUSTER show. And Pist On and Gargantua Soul have been announced to open the
SUICIDAL TENDENCIES appearance on July 24.
Additionally in September (segueing badly back to the Marillion thing), John
Lydon, of The Sex Pistols, will also be in New Haven. His Sept 4 performance
will be for all ages.
Woodbury Ski Area has an Alternative Festival coming up next weekend. On July
20, from 11 am-6 pm, the grounds of the Route 47 ski/skateboard area will be
hosting the bands VAPORHEAD, KISS THE MIDGET, ASH CAN FLASH, ZOLA TURN, LUCKY
13 and LITTLE JOHN, among about six or seven others. Tickets for the concert
are $15 in advance at the ski area, $17.50 through ticket outlets
(Strawberries Records stores), or $20 at the gate. Since it is a festival,
there will also be the obligatory skateboarding and in-line skating
demonstrations, multi-cultural concession stands, and food vendors. Rain date,
only in the event of severe weather, will be the following Sunday.
For the woman who thinks she has everything (or the man who would like to buy
me a little something), Chanel is selling a gold barrette inscribed with the
designer's name for $190.
Until next week, I'll be seeing you... on the road.
