ON THE ROAD/SHANNON HICKS
The PAULA COLE show that was postponed a few weeks back at Toad's Place when
the singer came down with laryngitis has been rescheduled for February 19. Jen
Trynin is still on the bill as opener, and tickets from the November 30 show
will be honored. Tickets are still available for the new date as well.
Incidentally, the second show Cole had to cancel -- at Mt. Holyoke College in
South Hadley, Mass. -- has also been rescheduled, that one for February 22.
There is going to be an opener after all for the AEROSMITH concert when the
band plays next month at the New Haven Coliseum. Talk Show has been announced
for the first-set slot.
It was a banner day for live music in the area last Saturday. Two great
performances, at separate locations, on the same day.
At a private party in Newtown, a local band, SEDGEWICK, was playing. Led by
singer and guitarist CJ (no last name), this is a four-piece band that plays
originals and covers, doing a great job with both. This was actually the
band's first full gig, although various members have been performing regularly
at Bassett's Coffee House in Brookfield. The band has a standing Thursday
night date at the coffee house; however, with Christmas and New Year's falling
on that day for the next two weeks, it will be a few weeks before we get the
chance to catch these guys performing. Mark January 8 on your calendar,
though. It's worth the wait.
Saturday night, a great surprise at Borders Books Music Cafe, now open in
Danbury. The store held its "official" grand opening over the weekend, with a
lot of musical performances and activities for entertainment lovers of all
ages. By chance, I decided to get to the store for the 8 pm performance
Saturday by a vocalist named LISA ST. ANN, a New York-based singer-songwriter
with two independently produced albums under her belt.
St. Ann's performance was outstanding, and the enjoyability factor was upped a
few notches by the fact two Newtown musicians are in the singer's backup band,
The Fabulous Band. JOHN CLANCY and PAUL CROWLEY, along with New Yorker SCOTT
FLETCHER, are touring with St. Ann, supporting the singer's new release,
Curiously Strong . Excellent, excellent album, and a super show.
They played two shows at Borders and has already been invited back to the
Danbury store, although no date has been set in stone. The good news is Lisa
St. Ann & The Fabulous Band will be opening the JEFFREY GAINES show at Tuxedo
Junction next Sunday (December 28).
Speaking of Tuxedo Junction, the club is closed December 24/Christmas
Eve/Hanukkah, but will be reopening on December 25. A DJ will be playing music
to get everyone back into the dancing spirit.
New Year's Eve, the club will host THE ZOO and SOUNDSCAPE. These performances
are not included in the First Night Danbury events.
Until next week, I'll be seeing you... on the road, compiling this year's top
ten best-of and worst-of lists.
