ON THE ROAD FOR AUGUST 22
I overheard a fellow music writer saying something a few nights ago about how
he had been so excited about the new 10,000 MANIACS album because he wanted to
keep calling the band 9,999 Maniacs. But then they went and hired a new
singer. Hey, we all have our quirks.
The new 10,000 Maniacs - which was 9,999 after losing lead vocalist Natalie
Merchant, but have returned to 10,000 - will be at Toad's Place on Sunday,
September 14, for an all-ages show.
Also new at Toad's Place is an all-ages MIGHTY PURPLE show, with Missing Joe
opening, on September 11; a GOD STREET WINE performance, also open to all
ages, will be September 25; and an all-ages night headlined by BRUCE
DICKINSON, with Geezer and Puller opening, on October 2. The September 7 show
by MOE has been changed to an all-ages event.
Also in New Haven, jazz legend CHUCK MANGIONE returns to Connecticut on
November 6, and THE RADIATORS will be back November 7. John Wesley has been
announced as opener for the MARILLION show in a few weeks.
The September 17 show by FLEETWOOD MAC at The Meadows in Hartford is almost
sold out. The tickets that went on sale Saturday morning (Aug 16) for pavilion
seats were gone within hours. There were no plans originally for the band to
be playing to an audience any larger than the 7,500 who would be sitting under
the amphitheatre's roof.
However, Tuesday afternoon The Meadows was able to announce that the lawn area
would be opened up, which results in the additional availability of 22,500
lawn seats. These tickets will be going on sale Friday morning (Aug 22), at
just $25 each. I say "just" $25 because the pavilion seats went at the
monstrous rate of $78 for Gold Circle seats (very close to the stage), and $43
for the remainder of the seats in the house. A ridiculous rate, if you ask me.
And even if you don't ask me, I'll still tell you that's an outrageous price
for a concert ticket. No band is worth that kind of money.
Much closer to home (and a lot cheaper...), a band called SPAM BRANDO has the
stage on Friday night at Danbury's Classic Rock Brew Pub. That's the newest
venture to be happening at the restaurant/club building adjacent to Danbury
Airport (formerly Moondance, formerly The Flying Squire...). Anyway, Spam
Brando has been around for over a decade, playing originals and covers from
the 60s to 90s. Danbury Common Council member hopeful Cindy Owens is the only
original member still in the band, but she says that doesn't mean a thing:
Spam Brando still rocks. Find out for yourself; the show starts around 10.
Until next week, I'll be seeing you... on the road.
