'Our Mothers; Their Art' Reception Planned

Text Size

“Our Mothers; Their Art,” on view at Newtown Municipal Art Gallery through the end of August, features the art of Florence Dohanos and Lucy Durand Sikes, the mothers of Newtown artists Linda Dohanos and Julia Sikes-Provey, respectively.

The gallery is within Newtown Municipal Center, 3 Primrose Street.

A celebratory reception is being planned for Saturday, August 24. The public is invited to view the exhibition, and meet the daughters of the featured artists — longtime friends and collaborators, who curated the exhibition honoring their mothers — from 4 to 6 pm.

The exhibition is hosted by Newtown Cultural Arts Commission. It can be viewed regularly weekdays from 8 am until 4:30 pm, and on weeknights when town board and commission meetings are scheduled.

This nautical scene by Florence Marie Dohanos (1935-2018) is among the pieces included in “Our Mothers; Their Art,” on view at Newtown Municipal Center this month.
A visit to her husband’s ancestral estate in western New York led to a new focus for Lucy Durand Sikes (1937-2017), whose work had been predominantly black and white architectural sketches. A love for painting landscapes and clouds is clearly seen in this landscape by Mrs Durand.
