Jerome “Jerry” Schmidt, 88, of Sandy Hook, passed away on August 16, at the Regional Hospice Care Center in Danbury. He was the beloved husband of Patricia (Corcoran) Schmidt whom he married on August 25, 1956.

Born on January 5, 1933, in Buffalo, N.Y., he was the son of the late Joseph J. Schmidt and the late Christina Hereth Schmidt. He was the youngest of the Schmidt family and the brother of the late Charles (Loretta), Ruth (Joseph Albrecht), Bernadine (John Urschel), John (Rita), and Robert (Betty).

Raised and educated in Buffalo, N.Y. (St Ann’s and Canisius High School), he received his Bachelor of Science degree and master’s degree in chemistry from Canisius College, where he was a member of the DiGamma Honor Society. After graduating, he proudly served in the United States Army Chemical Corps.

He was employed as a development scientist for the Linde Division in 1956. He became the manager of technical employment and moved to Newark, N.J., as administration manager in 1965. He worked for Union Carbide Corporation in different managerial positions in Tarrytown, N.Y., until his retirement. He then became the director of general affairs for the Takeda Corporation until his final retirement. He was a member of the American Society for Personnel Administration; the Administrative Management Society; the Westchester/Fairfield Compensation Management Association; the Board of Directors of the County Chamber of Commerce, and the Elmsford Rotary Westchester Coalition on college careers, where he earned several citations. He also received citations in recognition of his work with the Boy Scouts of America.

First and foremost, he was a loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He knew the importance of family and being there for the people you love and care about. He was a quiet man who often was in the background, but loving and supportive of his treasured family. He was a man of deep faith and was an active participant at St Rose of Lima Church in Newtown. His hobbies included woodworking, traveling, and sports (football, tennis, and golf). He and Pat were lucky enough to have traveled worldwide.

In addition to his wife, Pat, he leaves his beloved sons, Jerome J. Schmidt, and his wife, Robin, of Somers, N.Y.; Stephen T. Schmidt of Peekskill, N.Y.; and Joseph C. Schmidt, MD, and his wife, Christine, of Belchertown, Mass. He was the proud grandfather of Allison, David, Michael, William, and Judith, all of whom provided him with much joy in his life. He also leaves his sister-in-law, Trudy, and husband, John; many nieces and nephews; his wonderful extended family; and many dear and loyal friends.

Friends may call Tuesday, August 24, 2021, at the Honan Funeral Home, 58 Main Street, Newtown, from 9:30 to 10:30 am.
