May 30, 1921 to August 13, 2020

Sadie “Mama Sadie” Miller passed away in her sleep on the morning of August 13, 2020, due to complications after recovery from COVID-19. Not even COVID-19 could stop Sadie from celebrating a socially distant 99th birthday, where friends and family made signs, brought balloons, and wished her well through a window.

Sadie was raised on her grandfather’s farm in Tobaccoville, N.C., with her dear grandparents, James Rufus Scales and Martha Anne Shore. Her mother, Emily Scales, came home from work on the weekends and her father was Robert Jarrett. Sadie was raised with her brother, Rhoba B. Scales, and many cousins, whom she adored and adventured with all throughout life. She graduated from Winston-Salem Teacher’s College with her bachelor’s degree in teaching in 1945.

Sadie, a sweet soul with many talents, made a home in Connecticut during the war, where she worked in defense as a riveter, beloved housekeeper with the Heise family, a caterer, a creator of beautiful wedding cakes, and pressing dresses at Julie Allen Bridals well into her 90s. Sadie raised her children, Charles and Bobby, in Newtown, where she was very active in the community — Business and Professional Woman’s Club, Lady’s Auxiliary of the Botsford Fire Co, Striders Drum Corp, and Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. Being very known for her cooking and baking talents, The News-Times published a page-long feature, “Sadie Miller’s Kitchen,” on July 8, 1981. Sadie eventually moved to Rocky Hill.

The only thing Sadie loved more than being a mother was being a grandmother to five and great-grandmother to seven, and she adopted many others into her family. She also greatly enjoyed traveling, was an incredible party host, and deeply cherished time with friends and family. Everyone who knew Sadie loved her. Nothing was as good as Mama Sadie’s cooking.

Sadie was predeceased by her brother, Rhoba B. Scales; grandson, Justin Miller; bonus sons, Edward and Terry Miller; and best friend, Harriett.

Sadie is survived by her sons, Charles Miller of Rocky Hill and James Robert Miller of Cheyenne, Wyoming; grandchildren Christopher Miller and his wife, Karina, Amy Taylor and her husband, Jeff, Heather Miller, and Angelene Hayes; seven great-grandchildren, her namesake Sadie, Emma, Hayden, Lucy, Amari, and twin girls on the way; bonus son, William Miller; bonus grandchildren, Tanja, Eddie Jr, Terry Jr, Delores, and Russell; bonus daughter and advocate, Nancy Anderson and her family; and many other beloved family members, in-laws, and friends.

Thank you to the Apple Rehab Team in Rocky Hill for your dedicated care of Sadie during her final years. She lovingly introduced each one of you as “my friend.”

Calling hours will be at Honan Funeral Home, Newtown, on Saturday, August 22, from 9:30 to 11 am (*masks and six feet of physical social distancing will be required to protect the family, guests, and funeral team*), followed by burial at Newtown Village Cemetery. A celebration of life will take place in the future when it’s safe to come together in honor of our beloved Mama Sadie.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Sadie’s memory to the Botsford Fire Rescue, PO Box 335, Botsford CT 06404.
