Ever since his days at Newtown High School when Liam Ferguson set his sights on becoming a Medical Response Technician (MRT) — and for years as a member of Sandy Hook Fire & Rescue — he has been answering the call when his Newtown neighbors needed help.

Today the community is being called to help the fallen responder after Ferguson suffered a traumatic brain injury Sunday, August 23, while helping his father clear storm debris from their yard.

According to George Ferguson, he and his son were clearing debris from the recent storm when a falling tree or part of a tree struck his son on the head. Within minutes local police, fire, and medical responders converged on the scene to care for their colleague, stabilizing him and rushing him to Danbury Hospital. There, he was sedated and intubated before a neurosurgeon performed life-saving surgery to help with the large amount of swelling in his brain.

The following day, his sisters Kaitlyn and Casey shared on a gofundme page set up to help the family with medical bills that, "His vital signs are stable, he is in the ICU, but he has a very severe brain injury." They said he is in a medically induced coma, and has since been airlifted to Yale-New Haven Hospital's Neuro-ICU.

"We are hoping for the absolute best, while the surgeon has communicated to prepare for the worst," his sisters wrote in their post. Unfortunately, according to his father, Ferguson is in a precarious financial position as well.

After leaving a job last year as an insurance claims representative, Ferguson missed the window to continue health insurance coverage under COBRA. He was able to obtain temporary health coverage under a state program, but that coverage period had expired.

Ferguson was in the process of contracting a new policy through the state health insurance exchange at the time he was injured.

Kaitlyn and Casey Ferguson quickly established a Go Fund Me initiative to begin raising the more than $100,000 Liam's family anticipates he will need to begin covering his medical expenses.

Within about 24 hours, a growing network of family, friends, acquaintances, and anonymous donors who learned about the terrible accident had already donated more than half of the funds requested toward that goal. But Liam's recovery journey is only in its first few days, and the implications of his injury could certainly have lifetime repercussions.

"We are here as a family with him, sending up all our prayers, giving him all of our love, and asking for all of your support as well. Liam is a fighter with so much energy. He will push to get through this," his sisters wrote in a post on the site.

His family equates Liam's "love language" to his countless acts of community service — "he'd do anything for his people," they wrote, adding, "This is the fight of Liam's life. We cannot even start to fathom what it would be like to live without him."

Responding in a gofundme update after his arrival at Yale, Liam's sisters wrote, "If you want us to share a message with Liam, feel free to send us a note and we'll read it to him. Since conversations with Liam are one-sided right now, we're starting to read Harry Potter to him. Not sure if he'll love it or hate it, but he'll let us know when he wakes up."

In the meantime, the Ferguson family is asking the community to "please keep sharing," the news of his tragic situation, to "please keep donating, [and to] please keep sending thoughts and prayers Liam's way!!"
