To the Editor:

The board of directors and membership at large of Congregation Adath Israel would like to extend our gratitude and thanks to the members of our community that supported us so responsively this past Saturday when anti-Semitic markings were discovered on our synagogue’s exterior walls.

First, thank you to the Newtown Police Department for remaining vigilant and identifying the markings early in the morning on Saturday, which gave us an opportunity to quickly address the situation. Police Chief Viadero and his officers personally oversaw the situation and provided assuring security presence.

First selectman Dan Rosenthal was also present, providing support and counsel. He extended support from the Newtown Public Works Department, which immediately started to clean the affected areas. In addition, Craig Doersch Painting of Newtown was able to come in quickly and repaint our synagogue walls. Thank you, Newtown! Without such fast-acting resources, we would not have been able to continue with our scheduled open house the following day.

We would also like to thank Steve Ginsburg of the Anti-Defamation League, who has provided critical counsel and investigative support throughout.

A big thanks goes to volunteer members of Botsford Fire Rescue, who always are there whenever we need them!

And finally, many thanks to the countless individuals and institutions who have reached out offering their support. Thanks for being there.

The Board of Directors

on behalf of Congregation Adath Israel
