Occupation: I’m retired. Most recently I worked at Newtown Rehab Center for nine years, and retired during COVID. I was going to retire that year anyway, and that just kind of pushed it along.

Family: My dear wife Pat; and my brothers and sisters Myra, Rick, Jim, Linda, Bertha, Ernie, Eleanor, and Elizabeth. We are all very close-knit. I also had two more brothers, Ralph and John, and a sister, Patricia, who have died. My mother said the worst thing you can do is bury a child, and she had to bury two of them.

Pets: We have two cats, Quentin — as in Tarantino — and the other is Uma. My nephew is a film professor at Manchester Community College, and he is a big Quentin Tarantino fan, and we got them from him. They’re almost 15 years old.

How long have you lived in town? We’ve been in Sandy Hook almost 33 years. We bought our house and got married in the same year, in 1990.

What do you like to do in your free time? Golf! I also like to hit antiques stores, and all kinds of stuff. My wife and I have similar interests.

Do you have a favorite book? My favorite book is the first book I ever read, Call of The Wild by Jack London. I’ve read it probably ten times. I also love David Baldacci. His books are all crime drama, mystery, political intrigue — all kinds of stuff like that. He’s written probably 50 books and he donates a lot of the money he gets to a favorite charity of his.

If you could spend the day with one person, living or deceased, who would you pick and why? I would choose two people, both of my grandfathers, because I never knew them. My mother’s father died in 1939, at 38 years old, and my father’s father died at 59 in an explosion, in 1947. I’d just love to sit and talk with them. I’m a big sports fan, and my father says his dad was a big sports fan.

What is something you cannot live without? My wife Patricia … and golf [laughs]. She’s just the most wonderful person I’ve ever met in my life. Just incredible. She’s caring — I mean, she was a schoolteacher for 38 years.

What is your favorite travel destination? We’ve been to Italy, Scotland, and Ireland. I would probably say Scotland and Ireland, just for the sheer history. Of course I played the Old Course, yes. That was my 60th birthday gift from my wife.

What would you like The Newtown Bee to cover in the future? I would like to see more history on the town. You guys do a great job with The Way We Were. That’s a great job, and I get to read a lot about the history of the town, and see photos. I would love to see more of that, especially old photos of various parts of the town.
