Captain Richard W. Hyde

Captain Richard W. Hyde, 92, died with grace and dignity, July 21, in Daytona Beach, Fla. Captain Hyde was born December 7, 1917, to Lois Allerton Hyde and Burdon P. Hyde of Waterbury. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marguerite “Peggy” Budd Hyde of Newtown.

Commissioned in September 1941, he participated in convoy operations and vital resupply efforts. He was part of the amphibious campaigns in North Africa and Italy and took part in the amphibious assaults on Kwajalein, Leyte, and Okinawa.

Post World War II, he entered the Regular Navy as a lieutenant commander and served on staff with Carrier Task Forces in the Mediterranean. He also commanded a communications station in London and later oversaw communications for the Pacific Fleet during the Vietnam War. His final assignments were as the commanding officer of the Boston Naval Station and the Naval Station, Newport, R.I.

Captain Hyde retired from the Navy in 1972 after having been awarded the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service, and Navy Commendation medals. In “retirement,” he helped found the Mountain Valley Medical Clinic in Londonderry, Vt., and volunteered at Ormond Memorial Hospital.

He is survived by his five children and their spouses, Commander Richard W. Hyde, Jr, USN Ret, and Laurie, of Chula Vista, Calif., Mary and Gregory W. Wylde of Stowe, Vt., Susan and Doug H. Peacock of Ormond Beach, Fla., Matthew G. Hyde of Midland, Texas, and Ellen and Mark E. Hyde of Hollis, N.H.; and 19 grandchildren. Also surviving are sisters-in-Law Kate Budd of Minnesota and Ade Hyde of Maine.

A memorial service will be held for “the Captain and Peggy” at their place of marriage, Trinity Episcopal Church in Newtown, Friday, September 10, at 11 am. Captain Hyde will finally rest in peace alongside his beloved wife at the Newtown Village Cemetery, at 1 pm.
