Children’s Day Planned At Historic Schoolhouse

Newtown Historical Society will host a Children’s Day at the Little Red Schoolhouse on the grounds of Middle Gate School on Sunday, September 12. In 1968 the society acquired the schoolhouse and relocated the structure from its original site on Toll Gate Hill (now Route 25) to its present location.

The public is invited to visit between 10 am and noon. Costumed docents will conduct “classes” inside the schoolhouse for children ages 6–12 while recess activities take place outside. Docents will teach and organize colonial games, such as Graces, Trundling a Hoop, Sack Races, and Tug of War. Classes are for children only, but parents are invited to tour the schoolhouse in between classes.

Classes will begin promptly at 10:15, 10:45 and 11:15. In the event of rain, classes will still be held, but outside events will be canceled. Admission is free, but donations are welcome and appreciated.

Middle Gate School is at 12 Cold Spring Road. For more information visit NewtownHistory.org or call 203-426-5937.
