C.H. Booth Library is offering a series of creative writing sessions for young adults in grades 6-8.

The first writing session, “The Fantastic,” will explore the genre of fantasy writing. Participants will create imaginary worlds and use elements of magic in their stories. The fantasy theme will serve as a guide to the basic craft of fiction.

Each session will allow time for writing, sharing, and discussing stories in progress. Students will also have the opportunity to work on collaborative writing projects.

Author and educator Aimee Pokwatka will return for the second time to lead fantasy writing for young adults. She received her MFA in creative writing from Syracuse University, where she also taught writing and literature classes. Her short stories have been published in a variety of magazines, and she has served as the editor of Salt Hill Journal and The Newtowner.

A..J. Vietello, a sophomore at Immaculate High School and Creative Writing alumni, will be assisting Ms Pokwatka with the class.

The group will meet from 6 to 8 pm, on five consecutive Thursday evenings: September 24 to October 22. There is a limit of ten students.

Participants are expected to attend all five sessions, and preference is given to Newtown students and residents. There is no fee.

The Young Adult Creative Writing program is funded by the Friends of the C. H. Booth Library. For more information, contact Kim Weber, YA Librarian. Sign up online at chboothlibrary.org or call 203-426-4533.

Throughout the year, young adults will have the opportunity to write in different genres.

Aimee Pokwatka will lead the Young Adult Creative Writing series “The Fantastic,” beginning September 24, at C.H. Booth Library.
