Background: When Kylie Harrington went looking for a service-oriented franchise with a philanthropic component, she and her fiance Josh Claffey were thrilled to discover the opportunity to acquire a western Connecticut territory for College H.U.N.K.S. Hauling Junk & Moving (H.U.N.K.S. stands for Honest, Uniformed, Nice, Knowledgeable, and Service-oriented). The couple, who live in Washington Depot, met at Danbury Hospital where Harrington worked as a patient access liaison and Claffey was a nurse. The couple saw the franchise as a recession-proof opportunity with long-term potential for growth while providing Harrington an opportunity to operate a woman-owned enterprise.

Business focus: The company recently acquired a 26-foot commercial moving van and is poised to launch interstate moving services to complement their existing junk removal, estate clear-out, general labor, and donation services. The owners are motivated to recycle and donate as much of the material they collect as possible to ensure minimal inflow to landfills. Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity, and the Salvation Army are among the charities receiving weekly donations from the local College H.U.N.K.S. franchise, after which those donations are refurbished and/or sold in support the mission of those recipient charities. Each completed job also generates a donation that equates to two meals to the Feeding Children Everywhere nonprofit, and the company participates in transporting and delivering food supplies. Franchise crews can even can provide on-site work like disassembling and/or relocating lawn sheds, swing sets, and hot tubs, or even hauling away accumulated brush. The Sandy Hook franchise serves communities from greater Danbury eastward to Waterbury, and from Sherman south to Monroe.
