Volunteers Needed For

CVTU Fall Water Sampling

The Candlewood Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited’s (CVTU) fall riffle-dwelling benthic macroinvertebrate sampling date will be Saturday, September 22, from 9 am to 1 pm, at St John’s Episcopal Church in Sandy Hook. Volunteers are needed and will meet first for a brief training session and refreshments.

Teams will drive to sites in Newtown to begin sampling immediately after training and will meet back at the church, at 5 Washington Avenue, to return all sample containers and equipment.

The sampling is part of a statewide effort on behalf of the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (CT DEEP) to obtain water quality data under the Clean Water Act requirements.

Volunteers should wear layers, and bring waders or waterproof boots, insect repellent, and sunscreen as needed.

Volunteers under age 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This is a good opportunity for those interested in the environment to experience data gathering or collect community service hours.  Representatives from CVTU will be available to sign volunteer forms.

Should inclement weather prevent sampling, a rain date will be set.

Registration is required; contact ann.astarita@cvtu.org to register or visit CVTU.org for additional information.
