The Board of Selectmen at its September 6 meeting endorsed a list of safety guidelines that will apply at the Sandy Hook Memorial when it opens in November.

The list was drafted by the Sandy Hook Permanent Memorial Commission (SHPMC) in July. The commission is an advisory group to the selectmen.

The guidelines will be made visible at the memorial’s entrance on a metal sign post somewhere near the welcome sign. It details a number of guidelines informing visitors of what is expected and what is off limits at the park.

The sign will be headed with “Memorial Etiquette,” and then state, “This is a place for reverence and quiet reflection. Please be considerate while sharing this space with other visitors. Be respectful with your language and tone and allow space for private contemplation.”

The sign will then state a number of guidelines, listed as follows:

Please do not climb on, or throw anything into the water feature.

Please be respectful of the landscaping, walk only on paths and leave all plantings, including flowers, undisturbed.

Children must be supervised at all times.

Any items left behind will be removed and disposed of on a daily basis. Please, leave only your thoughts.

Gates will be closed and locked at sunset.

And, security cameras are in use.

First Selectman Dan Rosenthal noted that the wording on the security camera item is being reviewed in conjunction with Newtown Police Chief David Kullgren. Additionally, the town will be seeking legal guidance on how to word the restriction about either swimming or wading in the water feature.

Selectman Maureen Crick Owen asked that the town also include something prohibiting fishing in the memorial’s water feature.

“I’m serious, people will try,” said Owen.

Rosenthal also noted that anything not stated specifically under the guidelines falls under the general rules and regulations regarding public parks from the Parks & Recreation Department.
