FISCHBACH GALLERY SMALL STILL LIFE EXHIBIT OCT 10

ak/gs set 9/19 #712597

NEW YORK CITY — The Fischbach Gallery will present “Uovo Spectrum,” a small still life exhibition, October 11–November 10. It will feature artists Joe Brainard, Barbara Dixon Drewa, Nancy Hagin, Glen Hansen, Glen Holland, Denise Mickilowski, Meg Shields and Lowell Tolstedt.

Once described as “things that just about buckle my knees with pleasure” Brainard’s (1942–1994) drawings, collages, assemblages and paintings are in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art and many others. The paintings of Drewa (b 1936) address her fascination with age-old trompe l’oeil effects.

Hagin (b 1940) beautifully juxtaposes the crispness of exposed sunlight light with the vibrant colors of “found objects” and textured fabrics in her still lifes. Working in a precisionist style, the still lifes of Hansen (b 1961) vividly capture architectural obscurities, creating the sublime from the mundane.

The still life paintings of Glen Holland (b 1956) infuse ordinary objects with a mysterious but subdued tension. Mickilowski’s still lifes focus on the effects of trompe l’oeil. Mickilowski (b 1959) portrays arrangements of edible delights displayed within “hand-made” wooden containers.

Meg Shield’s (b 1953) still lifes incorporate a unique array of colorful objects. The placement and choice of these objects create relationships that are active and challenging. In his still lifes, Tolstedt (b 1939) meticulously layers colored pencil, depicting metal balls, foil paper, candies in cellophane wrappers, colored lights and lush flowers to accomplish extraordinary effects of light and texture.

The Fischbach Gallery is at 210 Eleventh Avenue. between 24th and 25th Streets. For further information, www.fischbachgallery.com or 212-759-2345.
