Senior services for Newtown seniors are available at the Multipurpose Building on Riverside Road in Sandy Hook. The Senior Center is under the auspices of the Commission on Aging. The center is run by Senior Services Director Marilyn Place. For more information about programs offered at the Senior Center call 203-270-4310.

You may drop in at the Senior Center weekdays between 9 am and 4 pm. A hot meal is served at noon, for which you must reserve three days in advance.

Newtown has daily door-to-door minibus service Monday through Friday. Buses also run all day from the Senior Center to Sand Hill Plaza. On Fridays, the bus alternates between rides to Danbury Fair Mall and Berkshire Plaza in Danbury (to Walmart Route 6). Cost is 65¢ each way for the Sand Hill Plaza trip, 75¢ each way for out of town. Call 203-748-2511 TWO DAYS IN ADVANCE to book a ride and get the out-of-town Friday schedule.

 

This Week’s Programs

*Newtown Senior Center is accepting donations for the White Elephant Room for the Fall Bazaar. Bring in your treasures.

*Sign up for lunch on bingo days.

Upcoming Programs

*Flu shot clinics will be Tuesdays, October 5, 12, and 19, from 9 am to noon, and October 26, 9 to 11 am. The seasonal flu vaccine includes the H1N1 strain.

*The movie on Thursday, October 5, at 1 pm is Keeping Mum with Maggie Smith and Patrick Swayze. Can they keep mum as the bodies start to pile up?

*Ice Cream Social on Thursday, October 7, at 1 pm, is sponsored by Belltone. Learn about proper hearing care and hearing loss.

*Bingo will be Thursday, October 14, at 1 pm.

*Lunch and Learn series sponsored by Masonicare continues on Friday, October 15, at noon, with keeping yourself safe in the winter months.

*Annual Fall Bazaar open house preview will be Thursday, October 21, from 6 to 8 pm. Regular hours will be Friday and Saturday, October 22 and 23, 9 am to 4 pm, and Sunday, October 24, 9 am to noon.

*Halloween Party Bingo will be Thursday, October 28, at 1 pm. Refreshments will be served and a prize for most original costume will be given. Also sign up for lunch.

 

Day Trips

*Showing at Westchester Theatre on Wednesday, October 6, is Jekyll & Hyde. Lunch is included. Depart at 9:30 am; Cost is $88.

*Enjoy an elegant lunch at the famous Red Lion Inn in Stockbridge, Mass., visit the Crane Museum of Papermaking, and taste seven different wines at Furnace Brook Winery on Wednesday, October 13. Depart at 7:15, ETA at 6 pm in Newtown. Cost is $74 based on 40–52 people.

*Villa Bianca Halloween Bash, featuring a family style luncheon, Halloween music, and magical entertainment will be on Tuesday, October 26, from 11:30 am to 2 pm. Costumes are welcome. Cost is $29.95.

*Oktoberfest, a Bavarian day of feasting, dancing music, activities, open bar, and entertainment will be at Hunt’s Landing in Pennsylvania, on Wednesday, October 27. Depart at 9:30; cost is $80.

 

Recurring Activities

*YOGA classes are Monday and Thursday at 10:30 am.

*Billiards room; poker/card room; ping pong; and Wii bowling, golf, tennis, and baseball.

*Wii BOWLING, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoons.

*MAKE CARDS FOR OUR TROOPS every Tuesday from 10 am to noon and 1 to 3 pm.

*BEGINNERS BRIDGE LESSONS on Wednesday, 10 am with Mary Matern.

Monday: AM hatha yoga, exercise, PM chorus group, art class.

Tuesday: AM line dancing, cards for troops; PM Tai Chi, pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc, Wii bowling.

Wednesday: AM bridge, exercise; PM pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc.

Thursday: AM hatha yoga, pinochle, poker, gin rummy etc; PM Scrabble.

Friday: AM Mah Jongg, quilting, exercise, chair yoga; PM knitting/crocheting.

 

Menu For Week Of

September 27–October 1

Monday: Stuffed tilapia with lemon sauce, parsley boiled potatoes, garden peas, whole wheat bread, pineapple tidbits.

Tuesday: Chicken noodle soup, broccoli quiche, stewed tomato, chopped spinach, multigrain dinner roll, diet fruited Jell-O with whipped topping.

Wednesday: Chicken cacciatore, bowtie noodles, cut green beans, Italian bread, oatmeal raisin cookies.

Thursday: Dave’s meatloaf with gravy, mashed potato, corn, wheat bread, mandarin oranges.

And for planning ahead —

Monday, October 4: Lemon chicken, couscous pilaf, bean blend, oat bread, apple slices.

Tuesday, October 5: Beef tips with onions and peppers served over egg noodles, diced squash, wheat bread, chocolate frosted cake.
